Sure is better than losing ugly. I have seen an improvement every week. Big Mac is right about the baby steps. The Broncos are still trying to find the right scheme for the guys they have on the field, and they are getting more cohesive as a unit in the mean time. I would have to say that's better than what Fox did last year. Fox made so many position changes and had almost the whole line out of position week in and week out. Seems Gary is using a page out of Wades book, by developing a scheme that fits the players, Kubes just doesn't have the horses that Phillips started out with. Elway wants to be playing the best ball at the end of the season, and so far, they seem to be going down that road

It's the system. same system that we have run in the Manning years. Can't win a championship with it. You can if the defense believes your QB will keep the ball and run once in a while. The reason the holes aren't there no defensive player goes with the QB on running plays they know Manning isn't going to keep the ball. Just key on the back and plug the hole. The DE crashes and the play is dead before it gets started. 42 Yards rushing the ball in 18 carries not counting Manning's 1 for a -1. 42 passes by the 10th game if he keeps up that amount of passes a game he will be worn down and again like last season. A no legs no arm QB can't lead you to the promise land. I would trade a ugly win or 2 for a running game. blame the line all you want but if the defense sees you in the pistol and you have a QB who can run the defense has to honor the fakes. with Manning not so.

I'm ok with him not being a factor 2nd round pick or not. Fowler and Norwood are just fine as 3 and 4 in my book, and that makes Bubba the best 5th receiver in the league. I'm not sure what is going on with Cody, but we aren't hurting at the position and that's a good thing.

I think these are valid points, but I don't think the threat of a boot alone will give Denver a functional running game. It's not that the weakside defenders are simply taking out the cutting lanes...our RB isn't even getting to that stage! D-linemen are hitting the RBs before a play can even begin to develop. So even if we had a mobile QB to freeze the weakside defenders, we'd still be getting stuffed at the LOS, because our line can't open a dang hole big enough for a back to squeeze through!

I agree. They were in the backfield in less than a second last night on some plays. Two seconds top in most plays. I was timing that last night. Manning has just adjusted and stepped up in front of the penetration last night.

One problem I noticed, at least on a couple of run plays, is that on double teams against a D-lineman, when one blocker peeled off to block someone in the second level, the other player was often having trouble transitioning to a 1-on-1 block. Honestly, it seemed like the double was hurting the play, because the initial blocker wasn't able to get in a good position to stay in front once the double team ended. The other problem is that the player looking for a second-level defender often seemed to whiff. I think both of those issues are somewhat correctable. Teammates will hopefully learn how to better engage and disengage from doubles, and the peel-off blocker should learn to anticipate where to find 2nd level LBs to hit. That's my hope, although it is also possible that these rookies just aren't ready to start!
One good piece of news: Mathis finally finished with a positive performance grade...if he can get on track, the rooks should should get the support they need.
