I don't go to I-Sports, but if anyone sees him, please invite him over. I don't know what happened to FX-3. He seems to have disappeared. Is he over at I-sports as well?

I don't think so. If he is then he's in disguise under an assumed name, but I'm pretty sure he's not there.

In the Aughts, three Category Three hurricanes hit the Upper Texas Gulf Coast. The evacuations became tiresome. Rita in 1985 and Ike in 1988 caused the most damage. The oil spill is a disaster, but it is to the east of us. Because of the Gulf Stream and the cyclonic circulation, the danger to the coast is from New Orleans to Florida. The economic damage is already huge, however. The worst that could happen is that the oil could wash into the wetlands and destroy them. They are our chief protection against hurricanes and the hatching grounds for an amazing number of marine fish.

Em I believe you meant Rita in 2005 and Ike in 2008...If a storm hits and pushes the oil inland then the ecological distaster will be exponentially worse. If the oil hits the Gulf Stream then the East Coast is in grave danger too.

You're right about the years, of course. Obviously I'm living in the past. Surprisingly, oil is easier to clean up on land. There are well-developed procedures for washing dirt, as ridiculous as it sounds. The refineries were forced to spend a lot of money to come up with them. In some places the ground was saturated with oil several feet deep. The EPA made them dig it up, wash it and put it back in the holes. Scraping up and washing surface contamination is comparatively easy. But when it's in the marshes - and there are immense stretches of them - there is little that can be done.

Bioremediation is an interesting subject, if you're interested in that sort of thing. One thing that the studies have made clear is that sometimes the cure is worse than the illness. Time will cause the oil to biodegrade naturally, while chemical agents can cause catastrophic damage. If we do nothing - except stop the leak, of course - it will take about five years for the oil to biodegrade. Careful treatment can cut that time about in half. The main concern is to not make things worse.

I think he disappeared from Facebook too...some people just lost the desire to blog, CK. Their priorities changed and it "lost its luster" for them.

I never think about FB as a place to blog, Lady. I don't know why--it just seems like a place where you post your comments and skidaddle. I know everyone seems to use it as a blog, though--I've seen a lot of the old Faux folks I'd known in my day arriving at FB in droves. We should get them over here too--some of them, that is, lol.

I know people lost their blogging selves, it's been for awhile now. It's just that FX's disappearance was so sudden and so complete. We've seen people with illnesses or family problems, that kind of fade off slowly... I don't know. It just seems weird. Must be me.

He still does the Squares Game on Wednesday night at Faux. Other than that I never see him except once in a blue moon on the Fins page there.

I went back 2 years on the old Swiss site and there were LOTS of faces there that have vanished... Monec, Phantom Ace, Leo, Absolute Truth, Shadow, Maineiacgirl, Lindadito, Kicks, Roxie, et al.... Even TryThink doesn't post here like he used to; he can almost always be found on Facebook. Everyone has their reasons... but keep in mind its not football season and we seem to have this conversation EVERY YEAR at this time.

=========================

You're asleep when TryThink and Reecey have turned my FB statuses into a blog. Holy crap. I have friends who won't comment on my page anymore because they're afraid they'll get 200 updates.

Sorry about that HG. I have friends who don't post on my statuses anymore for the same reason. I know some who even dislike my statuses after receiving so many email updates. Lol! I've been kind of giving that some thought too lately. I spend between 15 and 20 minutes daily deleting FB updates from my phone per day. At home it only takes me 5 minutes or so.

I disabled that feature for my phone - it drove me crazy getting constant updates. And they don't come through my email either. Hotmail thinks its SPAM so it doesn't come through. I only get updates when I login to Facebook. Life is MUCH simpler that way.

They get sent to my email. I thought once about having them sent to me via the SMS thingamajig, and thought better of it. My last phone could only hold two hundred total text messages anyway. That really sucked! Lol!

I have a question. Are the lurkers able to view through the walls of the new Swiss as they did the old Swiss?

I have my FB signed to "no update notifications," for those very reasons.

I'm aware that people have gotten away from blogging, Lady, and I know we have this convo year after year. Some special people might be hoovering more than you might think, but for whatever reasons, do not post. I've heard "this person doesn't like that person, and blah blah blah"; however, this new venue should make it easier for people to blog because you can make your own rooms with different agendas. Hell, if you want to be miserable, a misery  room can be set up--and it doesn't infringe on others' good times. The Old Switzerland had no options.

My that list of old users has me feeling so nostalgic, but for most of those people, we know the reasons they have moved away from Switzerland--and in fact, many stay in touch with some of us privately. FX3 just kind of fell off the face--no problems indicated before it happened

Yes, Reecey--they can lurk, but we can tell that there are lurkers online here. If there are more people viewing (see the Board Index) than posting, you know there are hooverers... Same at FB, although you can render your profile only for your friends--unfortunately, I am not at the level of FB--need to sell a few more books till I get there, lol.
