That's a great question my friend. Are the players not getting the helmets fit right? is it a chin strap issue? I'm suprised the Exec. VP of Football Ops for the NFL hasn't touched upon this subject.

I do get concerned when I see a player's helmet fly off and he's in the process of being tackled and a huge dogpile ensues...

A lot of the players aren't wearing the helmets right. A properly fitted helmet will leave a mark on your forehead after its removed and will also leave a depression in the hair. Too many players are wearing them loose and its causing a problem. When your head rattles around inside the helmet because its too loose, then why bother wearing it at all? It does need to be addressed.

I know that...it's pretty scary when a player gets his helmet knocked off and continues to run. Losing a shoe is one thing, a helmet another.

Hi Guys :)

HG I asked the same question last week on another site and there were some great answers. Basically there are two helmets that most NFL players use and one of the two is more comfortable and better looking (Though not as safe) The other point that was brought up was chin straps and the amount of fasteners and or the lack of properly snapping the chin straps. College is just as bad as the NFL if not worse some plays four or five helmets come off. So, the general consensus was vanity over safety. One thing that I paid attention to Sunday was the fact that flying helmets were more common depending on the team, might be front office decisions involved. Hopefully Goodell steps in and corrects the issue instead of creating a cute little fluffy wuffy NFL

I would think that an improperly fitted helmet could also be part of the reason why these guys are getting more concussions. Not just the fact that NFL is placing more attention on them.

Thanks, Kitty, for your observations as well.

Yeppers! Not sure if anyone else did this in school... but.... We had to create a container that could house an uncooked egg and fall fifty feet with out breaking the egg. (Sixth grade or so I think) Anywho it turned out the eggs that remained unbroken were those that were tightly packed in foam. and a hard cardboard exterior. Pretty much the same thing as a helmet.

What bothers me is the emphasis that is put on the helmet hits and some pretty steep fines, when Suh nearly decapitated Delhomme in the most egregious play I have ever seen and was penalized 7500 bucks? C'Mon Man!~ Wes Welker was fined 10k for making a snow angel. Seems like it matters who you are and where you play~

Excellent points being made regarding fitting and chin straps. All professional style helmets have basically the same "guts" if you will but the differences are aesthetic. There are four suppliers to NFL teams

Schutt
Riddell
Bike
Adams

Only Riddell has a model with built in electronics that actually capture impact data. Pretty cool and for only about $1,000 you can have one.

That is pretty cool about the Riddell Helmets with the electronics that measure impact... I hope they are keeping a database and can tell in the next few decades how players were affected from hits years before. I was just thinking back in my drag racing days we always used Simpson helmets well actually and for motorcycles too... They seem to hold up a bit better then the football helmets. I wonder why?

One thing that I notice is how quickly players take off their helmets when they come out of the game. In my day - admittedly long, long ago - you kept your helmet on all of the time so you could go right back in. You never sat down either. Every time that the coach would look around for somebody to send in, you would step right in front of him. I got to play a lot that way.

I thought there was an NFL rule that helmets must stay on at all times when you are on the field. Perhaps not.

If a player takes his helmet off on the field of play on purpose its a penalty. When it pops off because they aren't bright enough to wear the right size its considered incidental and therefore ok.

Ask and ye shall receive:
______________________________________
"Emmitt Smith" helmet rule - A player cannot remove his helmet on the field unless it is to adjust his equipment. This rule is dubbed the "Emmitt Smith rule" because Smith, who holds the record for most rushing touchdowns, was famous for ripping off his helmet to celebrate a touchdown. This rule was enacted to quell excessive celebrations. The team of the offending player is assessed a 15-yard penalty.
______________________________________
I think there is also an exception if there is an injury on the field as when a player is down and you see players circle up for prayer without their helmets on.

I have seen where a player angrily takes his helmet off and then puts it back on right away and get away with it. But if a ref sees it, out comes the flag.

I was just thinking back in my drag racing days we always used Simpson helmets well actually and for motorcycles too... They seem to hold up a bit better then the football helmets. I wonder why?

~slides off topic for a moment~

I remember growing up in Drag racing where we had the fastest track in the Nation @ OCIR until the idiots that be shut it down to have a nursery there... I grew up in Drag racing as my Dad knew Jerry Ruth and I got to be part of the "in" group back in the day. :D
I also raced Motocross out at Saddleback park until they shut that down due to liability issues. :(
Simpson helmets were widely used in drag racing because Simpson was the leader in all around safety equipment. For motocross though I think I always had a Shoei helmet as they were pretty much the helmet of choice at the time and I believe the first one to have a full-face model? (not 100% sure on that though)

There's a difference between auto helmets and sports helmets though because they are constructed in a way to provide for a much greater impact and then even break at some point to assist in the survivability. In that case it's usually recommended to replace the helmet after any thing more than a minor impact of the helmet. This would be highly improbable and costly to be implemented for sports. Now back to the sports helmet, I think they are constantly in the state of new design technology to assist in impact injuries. They're testing materials such as carbon-fiber and other high tensile strength with low weight ratio to bring forward. The inherent problem with these though is the cost factor for amateur sports is prohibitive.

Whatever the case, the situation needs to be addressed as to more and more head injuries occurring in football and what the long-term effects will be. We can't just dismiss it with the fact that these guys are getting paid allot of money and they should just nut-up and get it done. The lure of the almighty dollar is great enough to make some take risks that they would not normally make regardless of the possible long-term implications. The same kind of mentality though occurs in other aspects of our world such as gang violence and illegal drug trade, even knowing the risk they do it because of the possible reward.
That's my two (or three) cents....

Oh yeah and GO DOLPHINS!!!

*************************************'

The flipside of that is that these guys are voluntarily signing up to play in the NFL. No one is MAKING them do it. Kinda like...don't buy a house under the flight path at the airport and then bitch about the noise. No one MADE you buy a house there when you knew WHY it was so cheap. Just sayin...
