Yeah. The Scrotie, the unofficial mascot of the Rhode Island School of Design.

The costume is unique and at the same time horrific, looking exactly like a giant penis wearing a red cape with the scrotum hanging beneath.

The school’s basketball team is known as the Balls, and their slogan is, “When the heat is on, the Balls stick together.” The hockey team is called the Nads, and their cheer is “Go Nads!” The cheerleaders for the Nads are commonly known as the “Jockstraps” (since they support the Nads). The yearly hockey game with rival college Cooper Union is known as the “Supportive Cup.”

Woohoo! That tops everything. Thank you for that, Ladyhawk. Some schools take all of this stuff way too seriously. Texas A&M (you know, the self-important jerks who sued the Seahawks over the Twelfth Man) has a military marching band that they are immensely proud of. There are about 250 members, all dressed in military-style uniforms. The Seniors wear uniforms with riding pants and boots and they march in the outside ranks to show off. They came to Rice for an game and went on first, as the visitors. They were followed by the Rice band, called the MOB. They wore rubber boots and parodied the Aggie band. You would have thought that they had desecrated the flag, from the way that the Aggies reacted. I thought that there would be a riot! As I say, some take this stuff way too seriously.

I really thought that a deal would get done between the Chargers and the Seahawks for Vincent Jackson. Maybe it still will, even with some issues the guy can play at a high level and has years worth still left in him.
Maybe Carroll didn't want to take on the drama at this stage of rebuilding the team....

With the roster moves Pete Carroll (and GM John Schneider) have made, one thing is completely clear: PLAY well or you will find yourself unemployed. Period.

That's the only way to do it. The most notable coaches were successful because they would cut players that they loved when they could no longer perform. It's a hard business, but for football coaches it's win or die.

Our roster has been shredded...LOTS of veteran players are gone. What our former Pres. Tim Ruskell brought in (older veterans with experience) is being replaced by younger, bigger ones... kinda makes sense, huh?

Carroll's definitely laying a good foundation to build on. I'm liking what he's doing so far for your team LH.

I've seen it tried both ways. Bringing in veterans is a quick fix. A few teams - the Patriots are an example - made it work. But those teams run out of gas and you're stuck with unproductive players who are too old to trade. They dynasties were created through the draft. If you look at the teams that won five or more Super Bowls, they had few players who didn't come up in their systems.

Yeah. At least Carroll is just starting and already making extremely important moves for the Seahawks to be a force to contend with in the next few years.
Sad, but Parcells kept changing it up each year, but did not really seem (IMHO) to know where he was going with everything. Now, after letting Taylor go and setting us up with a bunch of question marks (IMHO), he has stepped down (which, IMHO means Sparano's days are numbered as well)--with nothing but that hunk of (very expensive) junk (IMHO) Marshall as "the big" receiver for Henne (I've yet to see him catch a clutch ball during a game, but of course, that was just preseason). The Dolphins are, once again (IMHO), starting over with no real plan of where the team is going. This has been the story since Joe Robbie died and Don Shula/Dan Marino left the Dolphins...

Perhaps, Em; but in this case, I've been proven right, time after time. Jimmy Johnson left after four years and lots of big promises that we'd be in the SB in three. Not only did he leave without fulfilling his promise, he named his successor, Dave Wannstadt, who continued Johnson's determination to get rid of Marino (and did finally), and then proceeded to destroy the rest of the team, which set the stage for Saban. I don't think I need to go into any explanation on Saban's short tenure. As if we hadn't been through enough, Cam Cameron was the next head coach. I don't even want to talk about him.

So, with all the excitement and razzle dazzle that surrounds him, then entered Parcells, who I discussed earlier.

It's not so much that I am a worrier--I mean, when you look at it in black and white here, you can pretty much see why I worry; but more about my questions, "When will it all end? When, if ever, will we earn back the respect that we held from the beginning of the team's existence throughout all the years until Jimmy Johnson's beginning of the end.

Does that help everyone to see where I am coming from, and not dismiss me as simply being a worrier?

If the Texans do well, I'll celebrate (in good taste, of course). If they fall flat, it will cost me nothing because I haven't worried about it.

I live and die by football. I used to always have UM as a fall back, but even UM has had a dry spell. I get a lot of pleasure watching whatever team (a REAL stretch when it was the JETS) Brett Favre plays for. (Never end a sentence with a preposition). Just watching his joy for the game, gives me a high.
Recently, I have Indy and the Texans as back-ups when the going gets really tough. If the Seahawks are still alive, I like them too.
In previous years (meaning those pre-Switzerland, when I hadn't become close to amazing people like Ms Bags, LadyHawk, Reecey and Emeritus, I never even dreamed that I could get excited about any team by the Dolphins. Now, although I couldn't ever feel the way I feel about the Dolphins, at least I can pull for other teams when the Dolphins go down for the count. (Mixing sports. Hmmmm. I have a long story regarding that. Author humor. I'll save it for another time, though.)

JUST FOOTBALL

Postby LadyHawk » Wed Sep 08, 2010 1:35 pm

"I live and die by football."

See...we are at completely different points in life. I cannot own that motto while raising two young children by myself ~ they wouldn't understand it. And since I didn't attend a 4-year university, I really don't have much care about NCAA football or an allegiance to any one university.

I enjoy the NFL in the fall...its a fun diversion for me. :D

You know how I feel about the single mother thing, Lady. You have the most difficult job in the world, and I say that with enormous respect for someone who does it as beautifully as you. With all the problems that befall you, you never pass them to them. It is clear from their smiles that they have the best mom there is--and as difficult as it is for you, you will reap the rewards for the rest of your life! There is nothing you can give children that is more important and magical as a great mom, Lady, and you give that gift to your little ones daily. I admire you, and I try to tell you that as often as I can...

BTW, I did not attend school at UM. I worked directly for the AD there when I was getting my graduate degree (and unfortunately, had to leave when my mom got ill, or I'd still be there today, I'm sure). When you go through a perfect season with a team and are rewarded with a National Championship ring engraved to you, I guess it's just natural to become a fan for life...

Did you see me mention you, PAO? I hope you did, and have come around to say you'll be here more often now that football season has arrived. You are missed, sir! Our Patriot fans have dwindled as you can see--so you need to be here to represent them (or we'll all kick the Pats to the curb, lol). Great to see you again...

PAO! Wow, it's great to hear from you.

ck, I was taught in grammar school not to end a sentence with a preposition (you will notice that I was careful not to split the infinitive), but there is no such rule. That convention was the result of the misapplication of the rules of Latin grammar. You can't split infinitives in Latin because they are part of the verb. My favorite comment on the subject was made by Winston Churchill, responding to a chiding in Commons for breaking the so-called rule. He said, "That is nonsense up with which I refuse to put."

Believe 16F suggested we do a 'pick em' (not you EM!) - but pick all the teams we think will win. Haven't looked at all of them but trust me, the SB winning team has a huge advantage at the opener. Seeing the SB banner for the 1st time is truly special :D

Just wish it was here :( but the Saints earned it. Not sure how muh the Vikes will miss S Rice and we'll see how much J Walker has left and never count out Favre...

Still I'd pick the Saints tonight. Looking forward to the game :)
